AMFA FILES WITH NMB FOR SOUTHWEST AIRLINES EMPLOYEES
Laconia, NH – November 6, 2002 – The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) filed today with the National Mediation Board (NMB) for a representation election on behalf of the mechanics and related employees at Southwest Airlines. The 1700 plus mechanics and related employees, who are currently represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), are seeking representation with AMFA. In order to call for a representation election, by a represented group, the Organizing Committee must file a minimum of 50% plus one signature cards for the NMB to conduct a representation election. Once the Board has determined that sufficient cards have been submitted, an election will be conducted. This review process will take approximately one month. “We’re excited about the potential opportunity to represent the mechanics and related at Southwest Airlines. Today’s filing, with more than 60% signed authorization cards, is the result of the hard work done by the supporters there. Typical of other AMFA organizing campaigns, supporters are not paid for their efforts. The long-term payoff is knowing they are going to be represented by a union of democracy, one where members are encouraged to attend contract negotiations and there are no secret agreements negotiated behind closed doors,” said O. V. Delle-Femine, AMFA National Director. AMFA is an independent craft union not affiliated with the AFL-CIO. AMFA currently represents more than 11,000 aircraft technicians and related personnel employed at Alaska Airlines, American Trans Air, Atlantic Coast Airlines, Horizon Air, Mesaba Airlines and Northwest Airlines. AMFA’s credo is “Safety in the air begins with quality maintenance on the ground.”
I understand that authorization cards were collected in approximately 30 days. The mechanics at Southwest must have been upset about something?

I had noticed MONTHS ago they (Southwest) were listed on the list of "Groups looking to organise". This didnt happen overnight. They had to wait till their new contract under the IBT went thru. _________________

Those SWA Mechanics are probably not happy about a union dues increase for politics without a vote of the members. Not to mention the highest outsource of work without the highest pay. _________________ Extorted Union Dues Should Not Be Used for Politics

I just wanted to remined people that the delegates that voted in the dues increase for the IBT were ELECTED by the members, and given rights to vote on key issues.
I've got to try to be neutral on issues since I built this site. I dont want to be seen as "pro" this or "anti" that.
Think of it this way, it works the same as our goverment, when congras votes in their raises we dont have any say about it, because WE elected them to represent us. _________________

So they voted them in. Do they have the right to remove them? And we have the ability to remove a congressman.
