Reasons to Merge at UAL? Try Money
By: John Pletz, Chicago Business, March 2, 2008

“United Airlines' top executives have a lot of reasons to do a merger—about 13 million of them—and another 17 million reasons not to stick around after the deal. The five highest-paid execs at parent UAL Corp. would receive $13.3million,mostly in stock, if they negotiate a deal that results in a change of control—meaning executives of a merger partner run the combined airline—figures provided by UAL show. The Chicago airline's execs would get about $30.5 million if they leave following a merger or acquisition. That's possible, since the two most likely merger partners, Delta Air Lines Inc. and Continental Airlines Inc., have indicated they intend to run the surviving airline….” For the full article go to: http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?id=28422 or perform a Google search of the article title for the most recent version.

Teamsters Weigh in on Continental-Unite Merger
By: Abby Gruen, The Star-Ledger, February 28, 2008

“Strong words from the Teamsters union today indicate that labor issues will be front and center in merger talks between Continental Airlines and United Airlines. The union said it will not agree to
any deal that does not benefit workers at both carriers…” For the full article go to:

Audit Finds Lax Aircraft Parts Oversight
Associated Press, February 29, 2008

“Regulators and aircraft manufacturers are not keeping adequate tabs on the quality of plane parts made domestically and abroad potentially raising risks for fliers, government investigators said in a
report released Friday…Some lawmakers recently have expressed concern about the FAA's inspector staffing levels. Elsewhere, the Teamsters union and a business traveler trade group earlier this month called for a moratorium on all aircraft maintenance done overseas because they say foreign locations are not properly regulated.” For the full article go to:

UPDATE
CONTRACT SURVEYS

March 10, 2008

As everyone was informed at the January, 2008 craft meeting we are preparing for our upcoming contract negotiations since our contract becomes amendable in December of this year. Article 22 of our current collective bargaining agreement outlines the petition process in accordance with Section, 6, Title 1 of the Railway Labor Act. A petition for changes of the current collective bargaining agreement is allowed within 120 days prior to the amendable date. We are not anticipating any resistance from the Company and are expecting negotiations to open September of this year.

The contract surveys that will be mailed to all members are being finalized along with the process by which they will be returned and tabulated. The surveys will have specific questions for you to answer and will also furnish a place for your suggested changes to current language in the contract. There will also be a place for you to add language that is not currently in the contract but you would like to see in the next collective bargaining agreement.

The surveys are a very important part of gathering the information of our membership’s desire for the negotiations. This process, in order to be done properly, cannot be rushed. We ask that you all take the time to complete the surveys when you receive them for it is important for your Union and negotiating committee to have the input of every member.

Rest assured that the surveys will be mailed out soon. Everyone will have enough time to complete and return the surveys for the negotiations process.

We will post a notification when the surveys are mailed to the membership.

Please make sure that you contact a Shop Steward if you have not been approached by one to confirm that your address is correct in our system at the Union office. If it is not, we will ensure that it is corrected. This is extremely important to ensure that you receive your survey in a timely manner.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please notify a Shop Steward if you do not receive a survey by Friday, March 28, 2008.

Re:
Mergers
Please post this memo for the Continental Airlines Mechanics and Related.
Recent newspaper reports frequently mention merger activities underway at Continental Airlines. In this day of multiple merger proposals and $115.00 a barrel oil, this is not surprising.
As the Division Director, I have been in contact with the management teams of Continental Airlines, United Airlines, and U.S. Airways concerning your interests should a merger occur. When there are developments, these will be reported.
The Teamsters position on mergers is this. We an~ not necessarily a proponent of mergers, but our assessment of whether to favor or oppose one will be based on whether we believe the outcome is in your best interests. In the case of a merger with United Airlines, we have advised both groups that we would propose seniority integration based on date of hire with no injury to either group.

Insofar as the content of any future discussions with either management about agreements, we would seek consensus on a contract amalgamation that would start with the better agreement in mind and that any future talks would focus on improved job security, competitive wages, secure retirement, and enhanced benefits that characterize our mechanic and related agreements.
You should read press releases with a grain of salt since reporters often have a narrow vision of what they wish to report and this often leads to misquotes and inaccuracies. Stay in touch with your Local Unions who will be apprised by the Airline Division of any developments.
