INDIANAPOLIS - Aerospace supplier AAR Corp. wants to add up to 400 workers to its maintenance operation at Indianapolis International Airport to meet customer needs and bring in more business.
The Illinois-based company is looking for mechanics, inspectors and sheet metal workers, among other employees.
Spokesman Chris Mason said they could hire between 300 and 400 people "immediately." He said the airline industry is rebounding after shedding jobs earlier in the decade.
"It's a challenge," he said. "That's our biggest constraint right now, is finding skilled workers and really attracting them back to the industry."
The company performs heavy maintenance and inspection work, among other tasks, on Boeing Co.'s 727 cargo carriers flown by FedEx Corp. and Boeing 737 passenger planes used by United Airlines, a unit of UAL Corp. and Southwest Airlines Co.
AAR's Indianapolis operation currently employs 950 people. The company came to Indianapolis in 2004 and filled some of the hangers left behind by United Airlines, which closed its maintenance center there 2003.
Mason said AAR leases 10 of the 12 former United hangers and currently occupies eight.
"If we can find more talented workers, then we can fill those other two easily," he said.
