Gamco aims to double facilities in five years

Gulf Aircraft Maintenance Co (Gamco) plans to double its maintenance capacity in the next five years from nine lines to about 15.
Kirubel Tegene, manager of commercial sales, said the company will require substantial funds to implement its plans and will do so from internal sources. Growing air traffic in the region has helped the company.
Tegene said while the global aircraft maintenance industry is expected to grow by around three per cent this year, Gamco estimates its business will grow by seven per cent. To accommodate the growing maintenance requirements of aircraft in the Middle East and Europe, the company plans to have a special paint hangar this year.
It already has a paint hangar for smaller and medium size aircraft and now plans a bigger facility to support the painting of large aircraft. This will cost around $5 million to $6 million.
Tegene said this year will be one of consolidation for the European aircraft maintenance market.
For the future, he said: "We will remain more focused on the European market, which constitutes nearly 70 per cent of the business."
As of today, Gamco has the maintenance capacity to maintain almost all types of Airbus aircraft as well as some Boeing units.
Gamco is equipped to maintain the Boeing 737, 757 and 767. In the case of Boeing 747, Gamco does minor check-ups.
Also this year, it plans to develop a full maintenance capability for Boeing 747s. "The company plans to have the D check capability for 747, which means complete maintenance capability by end of this year."
The D capability includes complete tear down of a Boeing 747, inspecting every part, reassembling it and preparing it for a test flight. This consumes 25,000 man-hours on a 45-day ground time.
On the Airbus side, Tegene said Gamco has the capability to maintain all current models. For the A380, he said: "We hope to have capability for its full maintenance by the time it becomes available for commercial operations."
