WINSTON-SALEM (AP) — US Airways Group Inc. plans to cut 50 machinist jobs in Winston-Salem even as the city is trying to lure the airline to locate its consolidated reservation center here.

David Castelveter, a spokesman for US Airways, confirmed Tuesday that the bankrupt airline is closing a landing-gear shop, a machine shop and a plating shop in Winston-Salem.

Meanwhile, Winston-Salem is trying to keep a reservation center that employs about 800 people. The airline said in December that it wants to combine the existing reservation centers in Winston-Salem or Pittsburgh as part of its plan to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection later this year. The consolidated center would operate in one of the two cities.

The center in Pittsburgh has about 770 employees. The airline hasn't said how many jobs could be transferred to the consolidated center.

The airline hasn't set a timetable for a decision, Castelveter said.

The closing of the machinist shops is related directly to Friday's union vote to accept $269 million in wage and benefit cuts. As part of the new contract, the airline was allowed to cut as many as 2,500 jobs among its baggage handlers, mechanics and ramp workers.

"This action fits into that category," Castelveter said. "There will be opportunities for some of the employees to transfer to maintenance facilities in Charlotte and Pittsburgh."
